Product Specifications

ABS Drain Waste and Vent (DWV) and Stormwater pipe fitting economic advantages are well known and well supported. They’re lightweight, resistant to a variety of chemicals and are cost effective. Additionally, PVC DWV pipe fitting are impervious to bacteria and fungal attack, and they are not effected by electrolytic corrosion.

PVC fittings are designed with high impact strength, which helps to prevent damage during handling and installation. All parts assemble easily using either solvent cement or rubber seal rings to accommodate thermal or ground movement.

ABS pipe fitting is the most widely used plastic pipe fitting material. PVC pipe fitting systems are:

  1. Environmentally sound.
  2. Provide long service life.
  3. Easy to install and handle.
  4. Corrosion resistant.
  5. Cost effective.
  6. Widely accepted by codes.

ABS pipe fitting is manufactured by extrusion and injection in a variety of sizes and dimensions. ABS pipe is available in both solid wall or cellular core construction. Cellular core construction involves the simultaneous extrusion of at least three layers of material into the pipe wall: a solid outer layer, a cellular core intermediate layer, and a solid inner layer. ABS pipe fitting is made to conform to various ASTM standards for both pressure and non-pressure applications.

ABS pipe fitting is used for:

  1. Drain-waste-vent (DWV).
  2. Sewers.
  3. Water mains.
  4. Water service lines.
  5. Irrigation.
  6. Conduit.

Various industrial installations
It can be used under ground or above ground in buildings. It can also be used outdoors if the pipe contains stabilizers and UV inhibitors to shield against ultraviolet radiation and it is painted with a water-based latex paint.
plumbing materials are resistant to many ordinary chemicals such as acids, bases, salts and oxidants.
ABS pipe fitting should not be used to store and/or convey compressed air or other gases. PVC piping systems should not be tested with compressed air or other gases either.

Because printing on pipe fitting is simple, markings are always easy to identify. ASTM standards mandate that pipe fitting be labeled as follows:

  1. The manufacturer's name or trademark.
  2. The standard to which it conforms.
  3. Pipe fitting size.
  4. DWV, if for drainage.
  5. Pressure rating if for pressure.
  6. SDR number or Schedule number.

Code Status
ABS Pipe fitting is recognized as acceptable material for DWV, sewers, and potable water services and distribution in all model plumbing codes. These Codes normally identify acceptable products for specific uses based on the ASTM Standard designation.

Pipe fitting is available from plumbing supply houses, hardware stores, and home centers throughout North America. Refer to our member website links .

Installing PVC pipe fitting systems is easy.

Contractors love this lightweight pipe fitting material. Just follow some simple, common-sense steps:

  1. Follow local code requirements.
  2. Follow recommended safe work practices.
  3. Follow proper handling procedures.
  4. Read the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  5. Keep pipe and fittings in original packaging until needed.
  6. Cover pipe and fittings with an opaque tarp if stored outdoors.
  7. Inspect pipe for damage prior to use.
  8. Use tools specifically designed for use with plastic pipe.
  9. Use a drop cloth to protect finishes in the work area.
  10. When joining abs pipe and fittings with solvent cement, always:
  11. Cut the pipe ends square.
  12. Bevel and deburr the pipe ends with a chamfering tool.
  13. Use the proper primer and solvent cement and follow manufacturer's application instructions.
  14. Use the proper size applicator for the pipe being joined.
  15. Rotate the pipe 1/4 turn when bottoming pipe in fitting socket.
  16. Avoid puddling of primer or cement in fittings and pipe.
  17. For threaded connections, always:
  18. Use Teflon® tape or approved paste thread sealant.
  19. Assemble threaded joints carefully (maximum two turns past finger tight).
  20. To properly support pipe fitting systems:
  21. Allow for movement due to expansion and contraction.
  22. Use hangers designed for use with plastic.
  23. Follow proper hanger support spacing requirements.
  24. Protect from nails, screws, and abrasive surfaces.
  25. When testing an installed ABS pipe fitting system:
  26. Follow the manufacturer's recommended cure times prior to pressure testing.
  27. Test in accordance with local codes.
  28. Use only glycerin and water solutions for freeze protection when applicable.

All the joints in plumbing pipe fitting system whether it's used for the drains and vents in house plumbing or as a part of a central vacuum system, are literally welded together with a chemical solvent. The solvent cement, applied to both of the pieces being joined, temporarily melts a thin layer of ABS, which resolidifies in the seconds after the pieces are put together and forms a seamless, waterproof, airtight seal. The process is simple but unforgiving of error—once the weld sets, the only way to change it is to cut it off. Here's how to keep mistakes to a minimum.

1. Measure and cut

To ensure that abs pipe will be fully seated in abs fittings, measure the distance between the shoulders on abs fittings at each end of the pipe. Transfer that measurement to the pipe and make a straight cut with a hacksaw. Scrape the inside of the cut smooth with a utility knife.

2. Prime

Spread cement primer over the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting where they'll overlap. The primer softens and cleans the plastic.

3. Dry fit

Assemble everything to make sure the pipe is the correct length. On fittings such as elbows, position is critical, so make a reference mark from the pipe onto the fitting.

4. Glue

Apply the cement to the primed areas on the inside of the fitting and to the outside of the pipe.

5. Push and twist

Slide the pipe into the fitting until it bottoms out against the fitting's shoulder, then give it a ?-inch turn to spread the glue and speed its cure. If you're attaching a fitting, push it in with the reference marks slightly out of register, and turn the fitting to align the marks. Hold for 30 seconds, then wipe up any excess cement with a dry rag.
